Everything About the Media Party Buenos Aires 2024 Hackathon — August 31 at AreaTres El Salvador

Gala Cacchione

Don’t miss the opportunity to participate in creating disruptive solutions and projects for the media.

The Hackathon is a classic, and it’s where the magic happens. We dedicate the third day of Media Party to creativity and innovation, during a day where multidisciplinary teams build prototypes of high-impact tools, products, or services for the media industry.

This year, the focus is on artificial intelligence, news, and democracies. We will feature teams from JournalismAI, Meedan, and Google Developers Experience, among other organizations.

Why participate in the Hackathon? Aside from the $2,500 USD in prizes courtesy of the ICFJ, it’s a unique opportunity to put what you’ve learned into action and build synergy with your peers.

Heads up! This year, the Hackathon will be held at AreaTres (El Salvador 5318) and requires a separate registration.

Hackathon Kick-Off

Got an idea but don’t know where to start? Don’t worry.

On the afternoon of Friday, August 30, personalized mentoring sessions will be available for individuals and teams looking for expert advice to steer the projects they want to develop during the Hackathon.

Spots are limited, so upload your proposal to Hackdash beforehand and reserve your spot on the Hackathon Kick-Off Billboard located in the Orientation section of the Konex courtyard.

Note: This is not a mandatory activity to participate in Saturday’s Hackathon!

How the Hackathon Works

  • 9:30 AM — Doors open at AreaTres El Salvador.
  • 10:00 AM — The Hackathon will begin with setup sessions and pitches for projects uploaded to Hackdash, allowing everyone to evaluate them, offer collaboration, and join work teams.

At this stage, projects and teams with similar proposals often merge, teams are filled out with people who have the skills or profiles needed for development, or some projects might not manage to form a team. Come ready to pitch your idea and/or share what you can contribute to others’ ideas and projects.

  • 11:00 AM — Hands on! Work begins on the projects. Typically, during the day, teams develop an MVP (Minimum Viable Product) or a functional prototype of the project and map out its vision and value proposition for the industry.
  • 6:00 PM — A new round of pitches takes place to showcase the results achieved by each team. With this input, the jury will deliberate to decide the award winners based on the evaluation criteria. Several projects may be chosen, just one, or—though this has never happened—none at all.
  • 7:00 PM — Announcement of the winners.

Media Party is not a typical conference. Over three days, attendees immerse themselves in an exploration of pioneering practices in journalism, artificial intelligence, and media business innovation.

The event will take place from August 29 to 31, 2024. The first two days will be held at Ciudad Cultural Konex, and the third day—the day of the hackathon—will take place at AreaTres El Salvador.

This year, Media Party is supported by Google News Initiative, the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), IFPIM, Meedan, MDIF, Internet Society, Telecom — Redacciones 5G, JournalismAI, News Product Alliance, Adepa, and AreaTres, among other organizations.
