Media Party Chicago is a space where journalists, content creators, and technologists can explore different perspectives on news communications. Catherine Stihler, CEO of Creative Commons, knows that in order to achieve this, it’s necessary to think about free access to cultural products, something that isn’t often possible without being part of a select group.
In her Lighting Talk “Better Sharing of News”, Stihler will focus on how open licensing has become crucial to empower newsrooms. Over the course of two decades, Creative Commons has built an extensive library for researchers of every background.
“Creative Commons’s long focus on open sharing has evolved into a focus on better sharing: We must pursue a commons of knowledge and culture that is inclusive, just, and which inspires reciprocity — a commons that serves everyone, everywhere”, tells Catherine Stihler to Media Party Chicago.
Stihler will be one of the guest speakers on Day 1 of Media Party Chicago, where she’ll elaborate on the continuous effort of Creative Commons to create a global and collaborative platform of cultural resources.
Who is Catherine Stihler?
Catherine Stihler is one of the leading voices in the movement for greater access in the world of intellectual property. Throughout her career, she has been a vocal advocate of Creative Commons licensing.
Sithler served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Labour Party from 1999 to 2019 and later assumed the CEO of the Open Knowledge Foundation from 2019 to 2021. In 2020, she was elected as the CEO of Creative Commons (CC), a global non-profit organization that provides free, easy-to-use copyright licenses that allow creators to share their work more easily and openly. CC also provides a legal framework for creators to share their works with others while retaining some control over how their works are used.
