Within the framework of the Regional Training Program, USD 1,000 incentives will be awarded to journalistic projects from Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico, and Ecuador that utilize data and artificial intelligence tools to tell high-impact stories.
The search for a great journalistic story does not usually begin with a cold database, but with a genuine doubt, a sharp observation of one’s surroundings, or a question that demands answers. In an increasingly complex information ecosystem, the ability to transform figures into human narratives is the differentiator that defines quality journalism. Under this premise, Media Party, in strategic alliance with the World Bank, is opening the call for its new Journalistic Production Microgrants.
This initiative is part of the Regional Training Program in Data and AI, designed to strengthen the technical capabilities of newsrooms across Latin America. The goal is clear: to encourage communication professionals to dive into the World Bank’s Data 360 platform, identify critical indicators, and apply AI tools for the analysis and visualization of stories that impact the region.
A Financial Boost for Data Journalism
The call will select a total of four projects, awarding a USD 1,000 micro-grant (in local currency) for each participating country: Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico, and Ecuador.
But the incentive doesn’t end there. Developed projects will have an exceptional opportunity: to be showcased on the main stage of Media Party Buenos Aires in October 2026. During the final presentation, the project that stands out for the most innovative development will receive an additional prize equivalent to the amount of the initial grant.
Who Can Participate and What Are the Requirements?
The invitation is aimed at interdisciplinary profiles, recognizing that the best data stories are born from teamwork. The following may apply:
- Journalists and editors from digital and print media.
- Designers and data specialists within editorial teams.
To ensure the projects reach an audience, there is a mandatory requirement: participants must submit a letter of intent or a publication commitment signed by a responsible editor from a recognized media outlet.
Selection Criteria: What the Jury is Looking For
The evaluation committee will focus on four fundamental pillars:
- Feasibility: The partner media outlet must demonstrate the technical capacity to publish the proposed format (e.g., multimedia specials, interactive visualizations).
- Data Usage: Strategic integration of World Bank development indicators.
- AI Implementation: Use of artificial intelligence for data collection, analysis, or visualization of the story.
- Regional Reach: Projects addressing themes transversal to the four participating countries will be viewed favorably.
