Media Party X Keynote: Everything You Need to Know About Trei Brundrett, Co-founder of Vox Media

Media Party

By Stephanie Zucarelli

Media Party is all about finding ways to revolutionize content creation and unlocking the key to digital consumption. To that end, Trei Brundrett, co-founder of Vox Media—the publishing conglomerate that set the benchmark for multi-platform communication and secured over $300 million in investments, including from NBCUniversal—is coming to Buenos Aires.

Within the company, Brundrett led ambitious cross-functional projects with design, technology, and product development teams to establish a new approach to news consumption.

His team was responsible for creating Chorus, the publishing ecosystem that enabled seamless integration of multimedia assets tailored to social media formats. His work pioneered a new cross-platform storytelling framework, allowing different teams within an editorial organization to intuitively collaborate during content creation.

Many of his initiatives originated in software development processes, particularly Agile methodology, which relies on an iterative approach where products continuously evolve based on user feedback.

We have the opportunity to reinvent how newsrooms work; thanks to new formats and media, we have the chance to create a dynamic that actually works,” he explained during a TEDxGeorgetown talk.

This framework led to the development of formats that now dominate social media with massive, cross-generational reach: explainers. This content format established itself as an industry standard by taking trending questions and transforming them into short, easily digestible audiovisual pieces.

Thanks to his efforts, Vox Media grew into a digital-native publishing powerhouse, with its revolutionary approach to content creation shaping outlets such as SB Nation, The Verge, Polygon, Eater, Curbed, Vox, Recode, New York Magazine, Vulture, The Cut, GrubStreet, NowThisNews, Thrillist, The Dodo, and PopSugar.

He is also the co-founder of Handwire, a digital strategy consultancy that developed projects for Fortune 500 companies as well as organizations like Microsoft XBOX, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Royal Dutch Shell, and Texas Monthly.

As an expert in web strategy and digital production, Brundrett led the 2008 campaign for Mark Warner, the Democratic senator from Virginia.

In April of this year, Brundrett stepped down from executive leadership at Vox Media to transition into a Senior Advisor role within the company. He also serves on the board of directors for The Texas Tribune, The McDonald Observatory, and the journalism initiative OpenNews.
