At Media Party X, Anita Zielina (CUNY) highlighted the urgent need for a new generation of leaders to guide newsrooms toward product thinking. She argued that shifting from traditional content distribution to a user-centered approach is vital for building culturally and organizationally sustainable media companies.
Zielina emphasized that this transformation requires dismantling rigid “command and control” structures in favor of leaders who act as coaches who trust their teams. By prioritizing interdisciplinary collaboration, iterative development, and learning from failure, newsrooms can move past legacy perfectionism and adapt quickly to audience needs.
Concluding her presentation, Zielina emphasized that adopting modern organizational practices does not mean discarding core editorial values. Instead, media outlets must find the sweet spot where mission-driven journalism meets modern product methodologies to ultimately strengthen democratic society.
