Miranda Marcus, Executive Product Manager at BBC News Labs, is preparing to take center stage as a keynote speaker on day one of Media Party Chicago. Marcus will delve into the BBC News Lab’s work with software automation and Artificial Intelligence while developing new tools for digital storytelling and audience engagement.
With a diverse background encompassing digital anthropology, design, and mental health data research, Marcus has emerged as a driving force behind BBC News Labs’ innovative initiatives. Having joined the BBC in 2019 to collaborate with the Internet Research and Future Services team, she brought invaluable expertise from her previous role as the head of Research and Development at the Open Data Institute (ODI). Marcus’s exploration of the social, political, and technical implications of data access at ODI laid the foundation for her contributions.
With a background in design and a keen interest in the impact of engineering practices on medical artificial intelligence applications, Marcus also completed an MSc in Digital Anthropology at UCL, with her research primarily centered around machine learning and the human body.
At BBC News Labs, Marcus plays a pivotal role in driving innovation by leading a diverse team of experts from various disciplines, including broadcast and digital journalism, software development, project management, and design. The team acts as a bridge between journalists and Research & Development, leveraging their technical perspective to tackle the unique challenges faced by the news industry. Their goal is to integrate new and forward-thinking concepts into the daily production and consumption of news worldwide.
As her team continues to push the boundaries of innovation, Marcus will keep looking for the future of news production and consumption.
