Journalism has transformed drastically over the last two decades, and professionals have struggled to engage with the ever-changing need of the public. But this isn’t a new challenge: The Knight Foundation has been focusing on promoting professionals to establish well-informed communities ever since its foundation in 1950.
Created by the Knight brothers (owners of newspapers across the country) its members recognize the critical role that local news plays in informing communities and holding those in power accountable.
Through its Local News Initiative, the foundation has provided funding to support newsrooms across the country, from large metropolitan newspapers to small community publications.
The Knight Foundation has provided funding for a wide range of projects that leverage technology to improve the way news is gathered, presented, and distributed. For example, the foundation has supported projects that use artificial intelligence to improve the accuracy of news reporting, and initiatives that use blockchain technology to increase transparency in journalism.
Another area in which the Knight Foundation has made a significant contribution to journalism is in the promotion of diversity and inclusion. The foundation recognizes that the media industry has historically been dominated by white, male voices, and has provided funding to support efforts to increase diversity in newsrooms and media organizations.
