William Lyon is one of the main guests at Media Party 2016 in Buenos Aires. He is a software developer at Neo4j, the open source graph database. As an engineer on the Developer Relations team, he works primarily on integrating Neo4j with other technologies, building demo apps, helping other developers build applications with Neo4j, and writing documentation. Prior to joining Neo, William worked as a software developer for several startups in the real estate software, quantitative finance, and predictive API fields. Keynote: Finding Insights in Connected Data: Graphs in Journalism
This talk will introduce graphs, the property graph model and the concept of a graph database at a high level. I will briefly show some examples of how graphs and Neo4j have been used in data journalism, including the Panama Papers, government data, and election campaign data.
Workshop: Intro to Graphs and Neo4j for Data Journalism
Graph databases have been used to make sense of data for stories such as the Panama Papers and analyzing campaign contributions. Being able to model and query data as a graph enables us to draw insights from highly connected data such as email records, leaked documents, and public data.
In this hands on session we will introduce you to the Neo4j graph database, including:
– An overview of the property graph data model and how to model data as a graph
– A comparison of the property graph to other data models and database systems
– How to load datasets into Neo4j from public web APIs
– How to query Neo4j using Cypher, the query language for graphs
– How to use graph visualization tools to explore and draw insight from the data
We will explore the Panama Papers dataset, learning Cypher along the way.
