At Media Party 2019, Steve Beatty reflected on how digital transformation drastically reshaped newsroom dynamics, forcing reporters to act as “one-man bands”. Beyond traditional reporting, modern journalists must constantly shoot video, curate photos, and manage social media, creating demanding workflows that fragment their focus across multiple technical responsibilities.
While acquiring multimedia skills is valuable, Beatty warned that these high productivity demands ultimately compromise deeper investigative reporting. As newsrooms cut specialized photo and tech staff, expecting reporters to double as technologists and managers, the relentless pressure to produce quick content threatens the dedicated time required for impactful, in-depth journalism.
