At Media Party 2020, Jay Rosen, Director of the Membership Puzzle Project, outlined the fundamental difference between subscriptions and memberships as business models for newsrooms. While subscriptions treat news as a transactional product that restricts access behind paywalls, a membership model relies on voluntary support from core followers, keeping journalism accessible to the public while securing financial sustainability.
Rosen argued that successful membership depends on deepening the social contract with readers and making the community increasingly valuable over time. By involving supporters directly—inviting their expertise, feedback, and assistance with distribution—newsrooms transform audience relationships into active participation, ensuring that journalism remains both independent and publicly beneficial.
