In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, media literacy and the preservation of human journalism are one of the main concerns on the agenda. Recognizing the need to address the challenges posed by artificial intelligence, Edward Tian created GPTZero in order to detect AI-generated content and establish a reliable framework for consuming information.
On January 2, Tian launched the app as a tool designed to analyze various properties of text: “perplexity”, which defines how unusual a sentence is constructed; and “burstiness”, which compares these sentences and determined if their structure is similar. Human writing has more “burstiness”, as it has more variation than AI written structures.
His initial expectations were modest, envisioning only a few dozen users. However, GPTZero quickly gained traction and garnered over 7 million views and attracting attention from individuals worldwide, including teachers and college admissions officers.
The overwhelming response reaffirmed the need for solutions to navigate the changing landscape of technology in education and beyond. Tian’s dedication to improving technology showcases his commitment to supporting educators and facilitating responsible technology adoption.
By providing a means to differentiate between human and AI-generated content, Tian seeks to empower individuals in consuming information responsibly.
