What Will You Find?
At Media Party, we embrace the challenge of innovating responsibly in a constantly evolving industry. This year, the focus is on understanding and applying different types of Artificial Intelligence, centered around three main axes: ethics, security, and privacy.
At the same time, we continue working on the core pillars of audience, product, and monetization alongside cross-cutting topics ranging from the evolution of local news ecosystems to disinformation, climate change, internet access, the creator economy, and product thinking.
Here’s a small sneak peek:
This year, as always, we will feature prominent international speakers sharing their experience both on and off stage:
- Ryan Gantz, founding member of the product team at Vox Media
- John Keefe, Weather Data Editor at The New York Times
- Aron Pilhofer, Temple University
- Maggie Farley, Director of Innovation and ICFJ Knight Fellowship at the International Center for Journalists
- Paul Cheung, CEO of the Center for Public Integrity (CPI)

What is Media Party?
What’s What at Media Party?
Media Party is a fast-paced event where many things happen at once. Here is a quick breakdown of the activities so you don’t miss a thing:
Keynotes: Top speakers will open the first two days in the main auditorium. Just arrive early and be open to inspiration.
Workshops: Two-hour sessions to learn new skills, methodologies, tools, or processes. Here’s the hard part: choosing which workshops to attend and signing up before capacity fills up.
Lightning talks: 5-minute flash presentations where the community shares processes, projects, and reflections. There will also be success stories—and failures, why not!
Media Fair: A Science Fair-style walkthrough, but for innovative media projects exhibiting their prototypes, services, and tools. An unmissable space to connect with the community.
Hackathon: On Saturday, October 7th, we get to work. A collaborative day of building high-impact tools, products, or services for the news and media industry.
Drumroll for These Updates:
MDIF Call: Thanks to the Media Development Investment Fund, this year you can pitch your project to experts, learn how to apply for an investment fund, and receive feedback. Find out how to participate here.
Demo Day: If you have a media solution, you can present your product in an auditorium before 200 people. To participate in Demo Day, send an email to production@mediaparty.org.
Milestones That Marked Our History:
Panama Papers: “The revolution will be digitized”—with that phrase, journalist Mar Cabra, former editor of the data team at the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists for the Panama Papers, opened her presentation at Media Party 2016. It was the largest leak in journalism history (up to that point), consisting of 2.6 terabytes of information and over 11.5 million documents. More than 370 journalists in 80 countries, across roughly 100 media outlets, worked in secret for a year and published simultaneously on April 3, 2016. Watch the video.
Media Party is made possible thanks to the support of Hacks/Hackers, ICFJ, MDIF, Internet Society, among other partners.
