At Media Party Buenos Aires 2023, Juan Manuel Lucero (Google News Lab) analyzed how artificial intelligence is being integrated into newsrooms to empower journalistic work. Through the Journalism AI Project—in collaboration with the London School of Economics—he highlighted that over 75% of participating newsrooms already apply AI in news gathering, production, or distribution.
Lucero presented key tools to combat misinformation and deepen investigations. He highlighted Fact Check Explorer for analyzing image context and Pinpoint, an AI assistant that processes large volumes of documents, transcribes audio, and structures complex data into spreadsheets to streamline journalists’ work.
In closing, he emphasized that AI aims to assist, not replace journalists, automating routine tasks to free up time for rigorous investigative reporting. He also invited the community to keep learning through monthly GNI Live sessions and the educational resources available on the Journalism AI platform.
