Annemarie Dooling: “Intuitive Reader Experience: Serotonin’s Influence on News Consumption”

Media Party

At Media Party Buenos Aires 2024, Annemarie Dooling (USA Today Network) explained how neuroscience can improve journalism by prioritizing emotional connection. She noted that while dopamine drives quick rewards on social media, serotonin promotes the calmness needed to process information. Therefore, she urged newsrooms to reduce “cognitive load” by eliminating cluttered designs that overwhelm the reader’s brain.

The expert highlighted that humans are wired to respond to stories rather than cold data, suggesting that media outlets learn from immersive creators like Disney or Meow Wolf. By focusing on human impact and triggering neural mirroring, media can foster greater empathy and build a deeper social bond with their audience.

As a strategy, she proposed simplifying interfaces, removing visual obstacles, and using timelines to help the brain organize facts. She concluded that to inspire real-world action, journalism must ease the user’s burden and transform news consumption into a reliable and enjoyable habit.
