Mattia Peretti: “Making journalism is not making content”

Media Party

In his Media Party Buenos Aires Keynote, Mattia Peretti challenges traditional journalism by addressing a profound systemic crisis marked by plummeting trust, news avoidance, and layoffs. While acknowledging Artificial Intelligence, Peretti warns against treating technology as a silver bullet for deep-seated issues. Instead, he urges newsrooms to pivot from a content-first mindset toward a radically human-centered model.

Peretti argues that journalism’s true mission is public service—helping citizens navigate their lives, engage with communities, and strengthen democracy. To guide this transition, he introduces a sustainability Venn diagram showing that long-term success lies at the intersection of social value and financial viability. For Peretti, modern media must align all operations within this intersection.

Moving forward, Peretti’s roadmap focuses on advocacy, evidence, and co-creation. He emphasizes championing this people-first approach and gathering data to prove it fosters both trust and sustainability. Ultimately, he calls on media professionals to reject the equation “journalism equals content” and instead experiment with new experiences that deliver real value to people’s lives.
