From Data to Stories: The Closing of the Media Party and World Bank Microgrants

Media Party

Next Friday, October 3rd, the Ciudad Cultural Konex will host a special gathering: five journalistic teams will present the results of two months of intense work using World Bank data, transformed into high-impact stories about labor and poverty in Argentina.

A Program Connecting Data with Reality

The Media Party BA and World Bank Microgrants were born with a clear premise: complex data can be turned into powerful narratives that anyone can understand. After an initial data literacy and visualization workshop, five teams each received 1 million pesos in funding to accelerate the production of their investigative journalism.

The process was not easy. Guided by mentors Silvina Heguy and Alejandra Dandan, and with technical support from Yanina Budkin and Carolina Crerar of the World Bank, each team refined their hypotheses, reorganized strategies, and redirected their work, culminating in the publications that can now be read in outlets such as Infobae, Cenital, Tiempo Argentino, Radar de Viajes, and Nota al Pie.

Five Stories, Five Perspectives on the World of Work

🔹Infobae | Julián Goya Prieto

He investigated where the jobs are in Argentina and what kind of work young people living in different regions can find. One of his findings was so significant that World Bank specialists recommended he delve deeper into it and use it as the spark for his story. 👉 Discover it here.

🔹 Radar de Viajes | Mariano Pizarro and Cintia Luz Pérez

They looked into tourism entrepreneurs, a key actor in the sector that is rarely covered. They found data and also a beautiful story in Patagonia about a family that transformed a town into a tourist destination. 👉 We highly recommend checking out the visualization of that story.

🔹 Tiempo Argentino | Guadalupe Desalvo

She explored the growing phenomenon of holding multiple jobs (pluriempleo). She shared stories like Esteban’s, who spends up to 80% of his income on rent and debt; Micaela’s, whose university education is not reflected in her salary; and Carlos’, who cannot make ends meet despite working three jobs. She discovered that multiple employment is no longer a localized phenomenon but is expanding across all sectors, with a particular impact on women. 👉 Take a look at the chart she created.

🔹 Cenital | Iara Mossayebeh, Candela Villalonga Zalazar, Carmín Ríos Fukelman, and Catalina Feltrin

They analyzed the impact of AI on women’s employment. They found that in Argentina, over 527,000 women could be replaced by automation in the near future. Combining data, questions, and expert insights with statistics, they offer an overview aimed at debating the future. “We need concrete strategies before it’s too late,” they point out. 👉 See the published article here.

🔹 Nota al Pie | Mélani Aguayo

Her idea sparked from a personal question during her commute from her home in Berazategui to her job in Chacarita: What is the real cost of a commute when you factor in both time and money? The result shows how distances and travel times impact working conditions. Along the way, Mélani also learned to use charts to analyze data and became so enthusiastic about it that this Friday we will ask her for a mini live demo. 👉 Here is what she discovered.

The Final Gathering

The presentation will take place on Friday, October 3rd, from 3:15 PM to 4:45 PM in Sala C2 Galería at Konex. In addition to discovering the stories and the behind-the-scenes process of each investigation, an additional 1 million peso stimulus award winner will be announced that day.

It will be a unique opportunity to understand how data journalism can transform cold statistics into narratives that help us better grasp today’s challenges. Because behind every chart, every interactive map, and every visualization, there are real people whose stories deserve to be told.
