Marina Gama Cubas “Carbon Credits for Whom? An open data platform for social, academic, and journalistic oversight”

In this talk, Marina Gama Cubas presents “Radiografía del Mercado de Carbono” (Carbon Market X-Ray), a platform developed by Clip, Ojo Público, and InfoAmazonia. This collaborative tool centralizes data on carbon credit projects to facilitate journalistic and social oversight. By unifying complex information, it strengthens the monitoring of these environmental compensation mechanisms across the entire region.

The initiative was originally created to organize research in Colombia but expanded to cover data from Brazil and Peru. Currently, the system integrates detailed information on companies, partners, and certifiers involved in the industry. This evolution allows for a comprehensive mapping of the carbon credit ecosystem across a large portion of the Amazon. By organizing previously scattered data, the platform has become a vital resource for investigative journalism.

To make the information accessible, the tool features search filters, interactive maps, and graph visualizations. These functions allow users to locate projects within ethnic territories and protected areas to evaluate their legitimacy and compliance. In this way, technology strengthens accountability in a sector that is traditionally quite opaque.
