How @tocateunvals Created the Media Party Branding Using Artificial Intelligence

Media Party

Lu Godoy, in charge of product design for Media Party, shares the creative process behind this year's visual identity.

This year, Media Party celebrates its 10th edition with a full return to in-person activities, which for me means designing a whole lot of assets. Considering the themes being covered in talks and workshops this year, I was tempted by the idea of creating part of the identity using artificial intelligence (AI).

These types of tools have been revolutionizing the visual arts world as well as the meme scene. Platforms like Midjourney or DALL-E 2 are used by artists to create mixed-media pieces, while open sites like Craiyon (based on DALL-E) allow anyone to generate images quickly.

How I Used AI in My Process

The way these tools work is based on a verbal prompt or premise. From those words—and depending on the AI’s experience generating images with that content—results are generated after a brief processing time. Many of these tools are in beta with limited access and waiting lists, so I opted to use Craiyon / DALL-E mini.

My idea was to use artificial intelligence during my divergent ideation phase for low-fidelity sketches.

In Conclusion

Using artificial intelligence didn’t cut back my workload; on the contrary, it amplified it.

It helped me brainstorm object combinations and compositions I hardly would have come up with on my own relying solely on my experience and memory. Within a few minutes, I had hundreds of sketches at my disposal that would have taken me hours to draw by hand.
