Florencia Pulla: “Being niche but leading like any other media outlet”

Media Party

At Media Party University 2024, Florencia Pulla, editor at El Cronista, reflected on the media business through the legacy of Joseph Pulitzer, noting that competition has always been the driving force behind innovation. Nowadays, the true challenge for a niche media outlet is not just competing against direct rivals, but fighting for user attention against platforms like Netflix or Instagram in a constant ocean of content.

To stand out, Pulla highlighted the need to connect emotionally with the audience through first-person narratives that appeal to empathy, moving past the coldness of traditional news. She also explained how using data-driven strategies and tools like Google Trends—recalling the success of specific content during the pandemic—allows them to detect real search needs and optimize reach through SEO.

Finally, the editor emphasized that capturing and retaining new audiences requires boldness within the newsroom. Today’s ecosystem demands a new profile of journalist: professionals who understand data and master digital tools, but fundamentally bring their own unique voice and are not afraid to take risks to stand out amidst the digital noise.
